So, if you had a garden with 11 carrots and a rabbit comes to visit...(a few thoughts from one lucky mom)

(Heidi) My grandfather once told me that when I grew up and had children, he hoped I would be the kind of mother with children that would rise up and call me blessed.  I'm embarrassed to admit this, but until today I didn't know he was quoting scripture.
I've read Proverbs 31 several times before--I always loved the imagery of a virtuous woman valued "far above rubies"--but I never really noticed toward the end of the chapter that same phrase my grandfather directed toward me--"Her children arise up, and call her blessed."

I don't mean to imply that I've got this motherhood-thing in the bag!  I don't really know how my kids would rate me right now--although, in the morning they wake up happy to see me, and when I tuck them in bed at night, they want extra kisses and hugs so that's gotta mean we're on pretty good terms...generally.  What I do mean to say is ...although I don't know about my children rising up to call me blessed someday, I DO know that I feel blessed being in their midst.

Sure, we have our moments--and plenty of them (words spoken in anger, time-outs, apologies)--but I feel totally blessed to be their mom.  It's been on my mind more heavily since Reyn had his 7th birthday this week.  He's growing up and I'm loving being a part of it.  I love that he loves to read.  I love that he takes the role of big brother seriously.  I love that he wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up (heck, I wanted to be an astronaut when I was his age.)  And although at times his constant questions can be a little overwhelming (especially during a movie), I love that he knows that he can ask Sam and me anything.  He likes to remind me, "How will I learn things if I don't ask questions?"  Indeed, son...indeed.

I was just showing Sam some of Reyn's math homework.  He's supposed to show math problems that result in the number nine.  I've seen his work for these before.  He usually puts things like 1+8=9, 2+7=9, 4+5=9, etc.  But this time it was all pictures.  He drew a rabbit in a garden with what used to be 11 carrots, but now there are only 9 (the rabbit was hungry).  Then he draws an elephant with 5 peanuts already in his stomach, who is about to eat 4 more.  The last was a drawing of an anteater's tongue sucking up ants in groups of 2 (4 groups of 2 to be exact) except for the 1 ant that he's already got on his tongue.  Man, I love this kid.  That's my kind of math!  I think I'll scan it to the computer--you know...for posterity.

I just realized, these math problems were all about eating.  Is it coincidence that he's doing math toward the end of the school day and he's dreaming of snacks at home (carrots...peanuts...ants?)
